Breakwaters, Seawalls, Jetties, Groins, Piers, Wharfs, & Docks: Inspection, Restoration, and Replacement |
|
The recent devastating earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, and China and the resulting Chile tsunami, as well as the recent explosion of the Gulf of Mexico oil rig and resulting massive oil spill, along with the 2007 bridge collapse in Minnesota, underscore the need for preventative mitigation and restoration efforts for these earthquake-ravaged countries, and for the many beaches, breakwaters, seawalls, jetties, groins, piers, wharfs, and docks along the coasts of the U.S. and around the world that may be in danger of destruction - partial or total - in the event of an earthquake, tsunami, storm, or oil spill. Charles B. Pyke, Ph.D., President, CEO, and Principal Scientist of Environmental Science & Energy, Inc., offers Construction Defects Analysis, Structural Integrity and Structural Safety Inspections, Investigation of Historical Structural Damage, and Seismic & Landslide Hazards Determination, plus Repair, Reinforcement, Renovation, Restoration, and Reconstruction - perhaps even Demolition and Replacement - of Structures and Facilities listed below, along with the Design of New Structures and Facilities. [Many of the services may apply to the earthquake-damaged Port-au-Prince, Haiti and to Concepciόn and other Chile ports.] These include, but are not limited to:
Breakwaters, jetties, and groins: studies, including damages to breakwaters, jetties, and groins from natural and human activities; possible adverse effects of breakwaters and jetties on beaches, shorelines, waterfronts, harbors, and coastal waterways. Construction defect analysis and seismic safety analysis of breakwaters, jetties, groins, and other coastal structures.
Construction defect analysis and seismic safety analysis, structural
integrity inspection, and investigation of structural damage on piers, wharfs, docks, seawalls, and other
coastal structures.
Construction defect remedies, refurbishment, reinforcement, and reconstruction for breakwaters, jetties,
groins, and other structures. Construction defect remedies, refurbishment, reinforcement, and reconstruction for piers, wharfs, docks, seawalls, and other structures. Inspections of breakwaters, jetties, and groins: construction defects, seismic safety, investigation of historical structural damage, and need for repair, refurbishment, reinforcement, enlargement (as needed), or restoration. Inspection of piers, wharfs, and docks: construction defects, seismic safety, investigation of historical structural damage, and need for repair, refurbishment, reinforcement, enlargement (as needed), or restoration. Inspection of seawalls and tidal energy dams: construction defects, seismic safety, investigation of historical structural damage, and need for repair, refurbishment, reinforcement, or restoration.
Investigation of structural damage to breakwaters, jetties, groins, piers,
wharfs, docks, seawalls, and tidal energy dams, investigation of historical
structural damage, and need for repair, reinforcement, or restoration.
Jetties: construction,
inspection, seismic safety evaluation, analysis of construction defects,
investigation of historical structural damage.
Jetties: Kelp and seaweed: research and studies; removal where needed. Ocean wave energy development and generation.**
Offshore oil rigs: inspection, analysis of construction defects,
investigation and analysis of damage and
potential damage from high seas, seismic safety analysis; repair,
refurbishment, and restoration.
Piers, wharfs, and docks: construction, reinforcement, reconstruction, restoration, or replacement. Piers, wharfs, and docks: structural integrity inspection, analysis of construction defects, investigation of historical damage and wear. Sandbars: removal or revamping services. Seawalls: construction, enhancement, expansion, structural integrity inspection, investigation of historical damage, refurbishment, reinforcement, reconstruction, enlargement (as needed), and restoration services. Seawalls: studies, i Tidal energy development and generation. Tsunamis: investigation of damage to breakwaters, jetties, and groins. Tsunamis: investigation of damage to piers, wharfs, and docks. Tsunamis: investigation of damage to seawalls. Tsunamis: protection from tsunamis; restoration and reconstruction services from tsunami damage. Tsunamis: research, modeling, and risk assessment. Tsunami warning systems: design and installation. Waterfront
Wave energy development and generation.**
In some settings, multiple generators in a single dam may be the most
efficient arrangement.
At locations where boats pass between the tidal basin and the open sea, gates
in the dam can be constructed so that they can be opened during the hours
straddling low and high tides, when ocean level changes are minimal. The
gates do not have to be water-tight. Small leaks through the gates will
not materially affect the energy generation of the facility.
Generators can also
be placed in locations, such as certain estuaries, where there is a natural tidal current of significance,
including tidal bores and tidal waves
(a term not to be confused with tsunamis, which are not tidal in origin).
** Miniature electric generators constructed in the surf zone to respond to
the rapidly rising and falling height of the water surface resulting from
ocean waves (even Great Lakes waves) approaching the beach or cliff. The
fluctuations can be amplified by the construction of V-shaped flanks,
including a sloping surface under water, that focus the energy into a narrow
and shallow collector, containing the generator. Like with the tidal
energy generators, a fish and seaweed screen will likely be necessary around
the generator.
Multiple wave generators, separated by a few tens of meters, along a given
ocean front, should be feasible.
